The developers of XBMC have announced this morning that they are renaming to Kodi.
The main reasons cited are it’s relevance and potential legal issues.
XBMC started as Xbox Media Centre many years ago. However, given that it struggles to run on that ancient hardware, the developers have questioned the appropriateness of the name.
Additionally, whilst the XBMC naming negates the trademark issues associated with using the Xbox name, many fan sites have apparently used the Xbox name and got caught in Microsoft’s Legal crosshairs.
The naming scheme will have little impact outside of a modified splash screen and the first version of Kodi will be version 14.
